TWELVE

We took their Jeep and El Calvo drove, west along Ajo Way. It was late afternoon and hot under a blue-white sky. I sat up front in the passenger seat and Joselito sat behind me. I knew he had his Glock trained on the small of my back, and if I went for El Calvo, he’d plug me without thinking twice. We drove in silence till we were past Wakefield and the JFK Park, then Joselito started to ask questions:

“So you was in Iraq and Afghanistan?”

“Yeah. A few times. Other places too, Africa, South America...”

“So you train in kung fu an’ all that ninja stuff.”

I looked at him in the mirror. “The Regiment trains us in basic self defense, based on Major Fairbairn’s techniques, and a lot of experience, but most of us do some form of martial arts on top of that. A lot of the guys like Krav Maga.”

“How about you? I know you do something.”

I nodded, looking out at the passing desert, the heat and the white-blue sky. After a moment I said, “Jeet Kune Do for the techniques. Whatever they say about Bruce Lee, he was the best. I also practice old style Tae Kwon Do, coupled with Zen Buddhist meditation, for the discipline.”

They were both very quiet then for a while. Eventually Joselito said: “You do Zen meditation?”

“Yeah.”

“What… like… what is that? Like mind control?”

“It helps you control your own thoughts and your emotions. It helps you focus, concentrate your attention, and see things as they really are.”

“As they really are…?”

El Calvo said suddenly, “You know, I always think about that—meditation and shit. Maybe… you know, maybe you can help me. I read that the Samurai, or maybe I saw it on a documentary. I like to watch National Geographic, and the History Channel, know what I’m sayin’? So, it might have been a documentary. Anyway, it said that the Samurai, after a life of violence and fighting and killing, they would often become Buddhist monks. I thought that was cool. I’d like to do that, you feel me? Maybe you can help me, man.”

“It takes a lot of devotion and dedication. The simplest thing becomes the hardest. Do you understand what I mean by that?”

Joselito nodded. “Yeah, I get that.”

El Calvo shook his head. “No, that don’t make no sense to me.”

I smiled. “OK, what could be more simple than focusing your attention on the breath coming in and out through the tip of your nose? Pretty simple, right?”

El Calvo glanced at me, frowning, and nodded. I looked in the mirror. Joselito was watching, frowning too.

“Yet, it is the most difficult thing to do in the world. Because within one second your mind has started to wander. It is impossible to hold the mind on a single thing for more than a tenth of a second. So a Buddhist master who can concentrate his attention for twenty or thirty minutes can achieve extraordinary things, because the concentrated mind is a very powerful thing. When
